I received my A.M.P. upper for the M11/9 via UPS Friday afternoon. That's my long and late day, and I don't make it home until about 10:30 PM... at the earliest. My plan was to shoot the AMP upper Saturday morning, but I remembered my club closes for maintenance and general clean up the last Saturday of each month. We have other outdoor options but the big storm front moving through produced wind gusts of well over fifty MPH today. With a three day weekend in my favor, I decided against visiting an indoor range for my initial testing.
I ended up at the 07 FFL/SOT shop of Rifle Dynamics and spent a couple of hours with owner Jim Fuller where we studied the characteristics of three different M11/9 slow fire uppers with the emphasis on the AMP. Jim spent considerable time as the armourer at Front Site back when they were using stock M11/9s for their free machine gun class promotion. Jim knows a thing or three about the MAC family and has personally owned examples of most variants. It was an interesting and educational morning for both of us that culminated with a truly great lunch.
Not only did the weather hinder my AMP testing, but the auto-focus on my camera seems to be going down for the count. With the weather forecast to be almost as bad on Sunday, I made plans to begin testing at 9:00AM Monday morning and I've scheduled at three M11/9 owners to help test and evaluate the AMP upper. We hope to run as many different types of factory ammo as we can lay our hands on using drums, coffin mags, and 36 round stick mags to give this upper a true but fair test.
Even without firing the upper, I've made a number of interesting discoveries and formed several hypothesis that need to be proven. I'll detail them and more in my final report and review. In the interim, here's a few crappy photos to help satisfy curiosity on the construction of the upper. I will say that it appears very well built and I'm anxious to send copious quantities of lead down range.
* Note the presence of high wear and brass marks on the various parts on the upper. It's obvious that this upper has been used and had a number of rounds fired through it. I'm not complaining... just stating this for the record.
